For the part of you that doesn't want to hear it

In psychology, ‘parts work’ invites us to explore the idea that we're not one ‘thing’ — we have many parts of ourselves, each doing a different job. Some are whole and relaxed. Others are on guard, protecting something wounded or sensitive. These fragments of our psyche mostly derive from the pressures of our childhood experiences and the strategies we had to employ to survive in life when we were little and nothing made sense.

As we get better at recognising our parts in real time, the situations that used to get us start to lose their grip. When our partner forgets to do the laundry we can become more and more adept at recognising the inner child part of us who feels unloved. Or when a colleague hands in a piece of work that stole your thunder, the archetypal dynamics become easier and quicker to spot and keeping cool becomes more effortless.

Many people can waste a life because of one weak part in the whole crowd. The job you dream of leaving but never do. The hobby you’re always too scared to share with the world. The words you never say. They often stem from just one aspect of ourselves that simply needed a bit of support and to be heard, and they cost us our authenticity and vitality.

Welcoming our parts matters in a reading because the guidance often asks you to see something from a new angle, and the parts that are on guard will notice. Many people fear psychic readings for this reason — that the guidance will land exactly on the spot that's been held tightly in check, and they won't know what to do with it. A good reader holds this well.

Occasionally a reading will trigger something sharp — frustration, even anger. That's human. You might feel tight, defensive, or suddenly triggered by something that was landing fine a minute before. That's not being difficult. It's doing the thing that kept you alive at seven without realising the threat is over. What helps: stay with the reaction rather than pushing past it. Breathe. Maybe smile. Hold the hand of the part that's scared. And bring it up in the reading. "That just landed hard" is great. Often that's where the second layer of the reading opens up, and what was resistance becomes the most useful part of the session. All emotions are welcome if delivered with kindness and respect.

And sometimes the part that doesn't want to hear it is the one that knows the most. The resistance is where the power of the actual reading lives. If the answer is 'let’s not go there today,' that's also fine, the reading doesn’t have to end in the room.
