Psychic and tarot readings aren't about telling you what to do. Sure, I'll channel your guides and they'll have their perspective. But your own freedom to choose your life trumps all of it. We can look to readings when we're stuck and when our intuition isn't feeling so present. That's totally fine, everyone has those moments. I do as well. It's hard to see what's going on and connect with what you want when you're 'in the middle of it'. But that's exactly when trusting in your own intuition counts the most. That's why in my readings with people I'm always looking to facilitate connection with their own intuition.
It's ordinary
Intuition isn't something only special people have. It's the most natural part of our day. Regardless of whether you think of yourself as 'intuitive' or not, you're making decisions based on your intuition all the time. Whether to take this road or the next one. How to phrase something. Which colour shirt to wear. Which article to read. These are all explainable in psychological or scientific terms as heuristic devices, learned behavioural patterns and so on, but that doesn't fully account for the fact that these instincts are a fundamental part of being human.
Same with experiences of a more 'psychic' nature. A lot of people think that they can't visualise things, for example, but can easily hold an image, or some other representation in their mind of their house keys. If we couldn't we'd be locked out pretty quickly. Same goes for the other senses as well – remembering and recognising a scent from childhood, or a song that was playing in our teens – these capacities are part of the fabric of being.
And whether we recognise it or not, we're always making bigger life decisions on a 'knowing' of our journey, or foresight. It's that subtle voice that whispers 'book that trip' and you just know. Again, you can look at these from the psychoanalytic point of view of attracting what we're looking to heal. That layer's there for sure. But so is a deeper, more spiritual component.
Hillman wrote that we don't learn, we remember. I know from my own life how true that is. Even before I recognised my intuition more consciously, I know as a child certain places had 'resonance' for me – London, Barcelona, the Andes, these key places in my life. I see with hindsight how I already knew they would be. You probably have a dozen examples like that yourself.
That's not even including all the reports of mothers knowing when their grown up children are in danger, or people 'randomly' just showing up when you need them to. I'm not going to go into the full list. It goes on and on. But just to illustrate how many examples you probably have of your own intuition in action. We can get easily caught up in stories around 'not being intuitive', so this is just to rebalance the framing a bit.
All connected
As separate as we appear to be in our physical bodies, we're all in the same field. The information you need, you can access. Not all of it is available to everyone, for all kinds of reasons. But the field is there, and it's not gated.
What often gets in the way is largely recognising that our own self-limiting perspectives are just a bad habit we've gotten into and can be retrained. Some other layers as well. The collective psyche holds a lot of fear from when psychic abilities were punished as well as programming around not feeling like we 'deserve it' or that 'I'm not like that'.
That's why the archetypes of the magician, the witch and the wizard hold such seductive power that they're in basically every myth and children's story. It's the part of us that's often been denied that we long to express. That we project onto others and call them 'gifted'.
Not one-size-fits-all
The thing is, intuition works differently for everyone. Some people might see auras, other hear voices, while others work more through a felt sense of instinctual 'knowing'. Or goosebumps. Or signs. I've found that the capacities that are most naturally available for you are the ones you need right now, and it's about appreciating and supporting them, rather than wishing they were some other way. Practicing builds the reps and makes them stronger. Gradually, you build confidence in them enough to feel you can rely on them for the most part. It takes a bit of effort in the beginning but it works. Other things can open up from there.
Not irrational
A lot of people who pride themselves on being 'rational' who I know are actually very intuitive but just don't want to admit it. I see that a lot. It seems like some people worry if they train that side they'll lose their rationality. But actually it's quite the opposite. As the other side of your brain strengthens, the two are able to work together more productively. They don't need to compete.
So if you're in a reading with me or someone else, I encourage you to push back. I don't dismiss anyone. I listen. I double check. It's a reason to dig deeper to reconcile our two perspectives, and it often brings better insights through the process.
And if your intuition called you to read this, that might well be an invitation to work with it some more.
