Every sacred site has one. And so does your land. What a land reading actually uncovers — for you, and for the place itself.
In my travels around sacred sites I spotted a common theme. A lot of these locations had what I've personally come to call a "designated hippy" attached to them. The world over, I can see how, one way or another, Spirit, or Gaia, appoints humans who have the right kind of attitude, connection, and personal story that resonates with what these sites need to thrive. I meet these people and they're filled with a natural passion for the place, and a sense of being caretakers, knowing and grateful for their own responsibility as part of the picture, however consciously or unconsciously.
As I've travelled and connected with friends, clients and others along the way, I've noticed that doesn't just apply to sacred sites. We all have a deep and personal relationship with the land. For those of us who own land — whether a simple small plot with a cabin on it, or a larger estate — or for those of us who rent but live somewhere that feels deeply connected with who we are, I offer land readings to delve into that story.
Healing isn't only a personal thing. We can spin around in our own wounds and that does of course deserve the space it needs, but a lot of problems work themselves out when we connect with something bigger — our place in community, as part of the biosphere. Bill Plotkin, the nature-orientated depth psychotherapist I've been heavily influenced by, defines the soul as our unique ecological niche in the Earth community — not our place in human culture, but our place in the greater web of life. He's clearly onto something.
In a land reading we often explore aspects of your own past lives, and what brought you into connection with a place. Whatever's needed around that will come through. It can reveal a lot about where you are. I've had readings where people have lost their land several lifetimes ago and been living in spiritual exile ever since, only to be given the land they're on a kind of karmic compensation for that. The poignancy of what comes through for you as an individual is often profound.
And for the land also. I tap into the story of the place and the 'emotional body' of the land itself, to learn what it's looking for, how it can itself grow, heal, and evolve, and the kind of role you can play in symbiosis with it. You heal and nourish the land, and the land heals and nourishes you. That's the opportunity.
In addition, there are the spirits. There might be all kinds of beings attached to the place. Deceased humans who haven't moved on can be worked with and supported to cross over. Troublesome beings can be handled. Spirits that are 'on the fence' about you can be turned into allies. And supportive spirits can be engaged and brought more consciously into the picture.
For the reading itself I don't actually do the shamanic work, I just advise and translate. But I'm available for follow up work with the spirits if that would be helpful. Similarly for doing clearings on the land of all kinds of negative energies that might be attached to it.
A land reading is great whether you've recently bought a place and want to get off on the right foot, or whether you've been somewhere for a while and are having unexplainable difficulties, or simply want to take part in this enriching process. Even if you don't own land, a reading around the place where you were born, grew up, or live now can be similarly meaningful. Or perhaps somewhere you're looking to buy or move to.
If this speaks to you, I'm here.
